If you want to replace the outer gear cable follow the same advice as for brake cables. The shifter will need to be selecting the highest gear and the lever pulled back to the bar for the cable.
Remove the gear.
If you have an adjuster at the shifter end turn it in then back say 1 turn reconnect cable.
